Ultimate Frisbee:

A Self-Regulating Sport

Abstract

Ultimate Frisbee’s distinct reliance on self-regulation raised a question: how does self-regulation reflect sportsmanship? By conducting in-depth interviews with ten participants that are currently involved in their Ultimate community, the following themes emerged: 1) through self-regulation, sportsmanship has enabled Ultimate players to make progressive conversations in order to keep the Spirit of the Game. 2) Sportsmanship is not only evident on the field, but off the field situations as well. Spirit circles, dancing, and interactions between teams are some common experiences that Ultimate players said portray good spirit off the field. 3) Ultimate players come from various backgrounds of regulated sports and their experiences show that regulated and self-regulated cultures have distinct impacts on the players and their perspective on what good sportsmanship looks like. Their experiences with a self-regulated sport allowed this research to find sociological connections to concepts such as social constructionism. The theory of social constructionism reveals differences between toxic norms that imposes certain behaviours onto its players. Meanwhile Ultimate has challenged social norms through self-regulation. This has cultivated a culture that focuses on inclusivity, positivity, and good spirit.
