BYOD @ PLC Sydney

BYOD or Bring Your Own Device is compulsory from Years 7-12.

Students in Years 7-12 can choose any Mac or Windows device that meets the minimum standards. They may either buy this from the PLC Sydney BYOD portal or elsewhere.

Students are responsible for all aspects of technology ownership. This includes maintaining the software, warranty, insurance, swap out plans for repair times, maintenance of hardware, printing of documents, backup of files, maintenance of cloud-based systems, logins and passwords, etc. We have integrated content into the curriculum to help students with this effort.

When you buy from our BYOD portal we have arranged with these vendors to allow PLC Sydney to be a warranty drop off point.

Minimum Standards for 7-12 devices are as follows:

Minimum specs are 256gb SSD, 8GB RAM, M1 Macbook or i5/i7 Intel 802.11 AC/5GHz WiF
An English operating system
USB-C charging is highly desirable
We recommend a vendor with excellent support such as Apple, HP, Dell or Lenovo
We recommend that an extended warranty is purchased with the device as long as you are able to obtain, usually 3 years
Accidental damage insurance is highly recommended
If you expect the machine to last for a long time, upgrade memory, storage and processor as much as possible

BYOD Responsibilities

IMPORTANT: ALL BYOD machines MUST have an English operating system. Students with non-English operating systems will not be supported by the helpdesk
Antivirus and malware protection MUST be installed and kept up to date (information regarding this is listed below)
Operating system MUST be kept up to date
ALL of your data must be saved in Google Drive, the laptop must also have a regular backup
All software required to meet teacher expectations is installed prior to any lessons conducted by that teacher unless advised otherwise
Laptops are to be charged ready for each morning - limited charging is available in Technical Services and we cannot guarantee we will have your style of charging cable. Power adapters are not permitted in classrooms
You must provide your own connection adapters (VGA or HDMI, etc.)
Failure to maintain this standard will be treated as a misdemeanour and dealt with by the Wellbeing team.

BYOD Instructions

For the protection of your computer and the PLC Sydney network, there are TWO requirements for being connected to the WiFi:

Ensure your antivirus and anti-malware are always up to date
Ensure that your operating system is up to date

Once these steps have been performed you may then connect to the School WiFi. If your device is found to not have up to date antivirus or operating system patches we will block your access immediately.

1. ANTIVIRUS

The school has purchased Sophos antivirus for all students Years 7-12.

2. OPERATING SYSTEM PATCHES

To be eligible for connection to PLC Sydney’s WiFi network your device must be kept up to date with the latest security patches. It is imperative for you and your peers’ cyber security that you maintain device operating system patching as well as application patching. Depending on your device the way that you apply operating system patches may be different.

For Windows 10: Operating system patches are available from Settings > Check for updates
For MacOS users, operating system and app updates can be found in the App Store.

3. WIFI

Once these two steps are in place, you may now be connected to the WiFi network.
