In S1 it is our aim to give our pupils as broad a range of learning experiences as possible, both indoors and out of doors to provide the skills essential for their journey towards excellence.
Craft
In Craft, pupils will make an Oddment Box out of Pine. In the construction, pupils learn basic handskills in Marking Out, Cutting, Drilling, Planing and joining using PVA glue and pins.
Prior to entering the workshop, pupils learn about workshop safety and in the use of personal protective equipment.
Graphics
In Graphics, pupils work from an S1 Graphics booklet with the aim of developing sketching and drawing skills both informal (freehand sketches - doodles!!!) and formal (using instruments or the computer). It should also help you to understand how these skills can be used outside of the classroom.

- Types of pencils and their uses.
- Paper sizes and its uses.
- Control and judgement in drawing.
- Producing a tonal scale - rendering.
- Colour and its effects.
- Texture rendering.
- Impact using thick and thin lines, shadow and highlights.
- 3D - Oblique views
- 3D - Isometric views.
- 3D - One point perspective.
- 3D - Two point perspective.
John Muir
All pupils in S1 are given the opportunity to gain the John Muir Discovery Award. (4Days volunteering) Information about this award can be found here:
At the end of S1, pupils who gain the John Muir Discovery Award are then invited to carry out a summer project (8 Days), on completion successfull pupils are awarded the John Muir Explorer Award and are then invited to become a Junior Ranger in S2 to go on and achieve the John Muir Conservor Award (20 days).
