Educational tips
By: Nevaeh Mackerley
It's almost half-way through the year. So we decided to ask our staff for some educational tips. Here they are
What are some tips for students that are struggling?
Practice saying longer vocabulary words to yourself to get comfortable with the words at the start of new units. Ask your teachers to repeat them or spell them when you take notes.,
To play around what works for them (index cards, review type games, rewriting notes, etc.) and to keep trying until they find their "thing" that works.,
Spend time every evening going over what you learned that day
USE YOUR PLANNER TO STAY ON TOP OF YOUR WORK.,
Take a few minutes every day after school to review new notes for each class.,Not to give up if they do not understand something - ASK FOR HELP!!!
Do not procrastinate!!!
Tips for parents?
Have discussions with your kid, mostly working with ELA, SS, and Science but have kids almost "teach" you what they're learning. It could help with their comprehension and they can apply it to everyday life.
I will ask my son (HS Junior) to teach me the material he has learned/ is being assessed on. If he can teach it, or at the very least explain it to me, he generally has a confident grasp on the material.
Ask your kids to teach you something they are learning. If they get stuck while they tell you about it, look it up with them or ask to look at their notes with them.
Check the homework log included in the team newsletter sent every week Knowing what apps are used to study (Blooket, GimKit, etc)
Any other tips or tricks ?
Studying can be tedious, make sure you break it up or set goals to work toward such as ten minutes on your phone or your favorite snack. As much as it can be annoying to study, it is important you develop strategies that work for you early on so you can continue to be successful as you go through your education.
Have conversations with your teachers about something you are learning. Ask them things. When you talk about topics in conversation, you learn details you may have missed and you remember more easily.
If test taking is not a strength, be sure to get all possible credit in classwork. This way a bad test grade will not have such a huge impact on your overall class average.
