Got2B Glued Hairspray is a favorite brand amongst dancers who have done Party Girl curls in the past. Any hairspray is fine.
Spray Gel can be helpful for heatless curls.
Hair Wax is helpful for slicking down baby hairs. *Be sure to use this BEFORE hairspray. Using hair wax after hairspray will cause the hairspray to flake.
Mousse is helpful to put in the hair before beginning the curling process, as it helps hold the curl.
Hair pins are the most helpful in making buns as they are able to grab more hair than a bobby pin, especially for thicker hair.
*For party girl hair, these can be helpful to pin bows as well as pinning the hairnet to the ponytail between shows to keep the curls intact.
Bobby pins are helpful to pin down fly away hairs and add finishing touches. They can also be useful for finer hair in making buns.
*A necessity for pinning hairpieces. Please ensure that you have plenty extra on hand.
We recommend the MetaGrip brand, however any bobby pins are fine.
Hair nets are helpful in keeping the bun looking neat and keeping fly away hairs down. They are a necessity for performances.
*For party girl or carousel hair, a hairnet pinned to the ponytail holding the curls is helpful to keep the curls intact between shows.
Smoothing brushes & Tail comb are helpful in smoothing down flyaway hairs. Tail combs are helpful in tucking hair into wig caps.
Step-by-Step Curling Iron Instructions:
Step 1:
Gather hair into a half-up half-down ponytail at the crown of the head. It is helpful to use two hair elastics for security.
Step 2:
Apply gel or mousse to the hair before you begin curling.
*Please note: If you opt for traditional hair gel, you will need plenty of time for the hair to dry before taking out curls. Otherwise, if the hair is not dry, your curls will fall out.
Step 3:
Pin ponytail aside, and begin curling 1/4" sections of hair, starting at the root. Before beginning to curl, spray the strand with hairspray. Release the clip of the iron as you twist, and hold or pin the curl as it cools. If you release the curl before it is completely cool, it is likely to fall out and will not last.
Step 4:
Repeat the curling process with the hair secured in the elastic.
Spray hair generously with hairspray. Use a smoothing brush to smooth down flyaway hairs.
