Trauma Sensitive Schools Online Professional Development - Trauma-Sensitive Schools Learning Modules are available to Georgia educators with permission from the Wisconsin Department of Instruction Initiative and is modeled after the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) school improvement process focusing first on universal practices (Tier 1).  Modules for students who need additional support (Tier 2) and intensive interventions for students who require ongoing support (Tier 3) are under development. This change effort within each school is best facilitated by a school-based team, such as the PBIS or MTSS team, who commits to additional professional development provided through these modules.

ACEs are Adverse Childhood Experiences. Our ACE history counts experiences of abuse, neglect and household challenges that happened to us as children. But that number does not define us. It is simply an entry point to our own personal story. Where it leads is up to you.

Trauma has a direct impact on a child’s learning. Schools must recognize and understand the impact of trauma in order to create an environment that enables children who have experienced trauma to succeed.

When we experience trauma, our mental and physical health are impacted.  Body-based interventions such as yoga and mindfulness can uniquely help to address the effects of trauma and improve our health moving forward.

This offers school and district administrators and staff a roadmap and tools for adopting a school- or districtwide approach to addressing trauma and promoting resilience for everyone in the learning environment. The package includes the following modules: Understanding Trauma & Its Impact, Building Trauma-Sensitive Schools, and Leading Trauma-Sensitive Schools.

TIROS outlines a framework for implementing trauma-informed, resilience-oriented approaches in any school or school district. The primary audience for this toolkit includes school administrators, school board members, teachers, and student support staff, parents and families, and community partners. It utilizes tools, videos, professional development, slide decks, and concise instruction to explain the concepts of trauma and toxic stress, offers individual and school-wide strategies for addressing trauma and fostering resilience for students, staff, and families, and offers strategies to assess the impact of these adaptations throughout the school community.

These resources will not only equip people to care for themselves, but will also train individuals in the basics of trauma-informed care to more effectively support those who have experienced the effects of trauma. This toolkit is set out in differing levels for differing individual needs and capabilities at this time.

When a student feels a sense of belonging at school, they thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Research suggests that students with a high sense of belonging are happier, healthier, and more engaged learners, and also have better academic outcomes. A student’s sense of belonging can come from connections with both peers and adults. This guide includes five strategies for building strong relationships with students and creating a positive school culture where everyone feels they belong.

This Directory is designed to help parents/caregivers and other adults find resources for children, as well as youth, teens, and adults, who have been impacted by trauma and have attachment challenges.

This toolkit is designed to give practitioners guidance, strategies and models that will support their work to change school policies and practices around student discipline. This toolkit’s goal is to help educators meet the needs of students experiencing trauma. This Toolkit also seeks, very intentionally, to dispel the common misconception around trauma-informed advocacy that teachers should behave as therapists. Rather this Toolkit aims to equip educators with the knowledge they need to recognize trauma when it appears in their schools  in order to prevent retraumatizing a student.

The content of this toolkit is based on a series of five professional development sessions that Thriving Minds offered during the 2021-2022 school year. Each of the pages below reflects the information presented in one of those sessions and includes an embedded video of the full PD session. Throughout the pages, you'll find a variety of resources you can use to begin implementing trauma-informed, healing-centered practices within your school or district.
