Developed by Harvard University’s Ecological Approaches to Social Emotional Learning (EASEL) Laboratory, kernels are specific activities or strategies that are commonly used by research-based programs to support the growth and development of social and emotional skills and competencies. Kernels have been developed for grades K-6 and include a variety of activity types and instructional methods, such as games, routines, and storytelling. Each kernel includes adaptations and extension activities, as well as grade level differentiations when applicable.

A Mindfulness -Based Kindness Curriculum for PreSchoolers

Inner Explorer program is a series of daily 5-10 minute audio-guided mindfulness practices. The program focuses on key areas of development, bringing mindfulness to education and helping students prepare for learning. Daily practice teaches kids the practical techniques to appropriately handle difficult emotions such as stress, anxiety, anger and more. Inner Explorer offers programs for all age-groups (PreK-12) that help students with the following themes:  Discovering Breathing and Relaxation Exercises; Learning Awareness of Senses; Using Thought and Emotional Regulation; Developing Compassion and Connection; and Promoting Social Emotional Learning.

This classroom kit for grades K-5, was created to help kids and teachers activate the social and emotional traits (we call them Superpowers) that make life good in schools. Lions Quest is a comprehensive and universal, evidence-based social and emotional learning program. SEL is a process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

MindUP is a CASEL SELect program, serving children ages three to fourteen. Offers school-wide training and support for teachers, staff, administrators, and parents. Has been shown to reduce aggression and increase pro-social behaviors and evidence also demonstrates positive impact on academic measures, such as math and language arts.

This toolkit is a flexible set of practical tools, templates and activities that can be used with staff and youth to increase intentional practices that support social and emotional learning. A Systemic Approach to SEL - RULER is a systemic evidence-based approach to SEL developed at the Center for Emotional Intelligence. A professional learning approach designed to bring a positive school climate into the classroom and lesson planning. DBT STEPS-A: Implementation and Training - a universal social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum designed for middle and high school students in educational settings. The DBT STEPS-A curriculum is designed to help adolescents develop coping strategies and decision-making abilities, especially under emotional distress. 

DBT Informed School Counseling Strategies - School mental health staff are provided tools to identify student goals and behavioral targets for counseling sessions as well as the rationale of using a chain analysis as a method of assessment and guide to determining effective solutions. Additionally, participants are provided step-by-step processes for providing skills coaching (based on DBT STEPS-A skills) to students “on the fly” when needed during the school day in order to increase the amount of time students spend in the classroom.

In particular, PEERS for Adolescents provides a joint program for teenagers and their parents, building students' social skills and providing their guardian(s) with the means to support their growth and future endeavors.

The Assessment Guide provides several resources for leaders and implementation teams in PreK-12th grade settings who are making decisions about selecting and using measures of student SEL. Studies consistently show that increasing students’ social and emotional competence has a positive impact on their ability to succeed academically. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs are arguably more important now than ever to support student mental health, interpersonal skill development and academic success using a universal public health approach in education. However, many schools and communities question what SEL programs are and face challenges to assess SEL program quality and alignment with local education priorities. This learning session will provide practical information about how to communicate what SEL is, including an overview of free, reputable resources that can be used to assess SEL program components and evidence. We will offer resources and facilitated discussion related to challenges communicating about SEL to equip participants with skills to lead discussions and answer questions about SEL in their communities.
