In project two we are making a lantern using laser cutting. first we design the shape of the lantern then choose a theme to create the lantern on. We used extrude cut to cut into the shape. Then we exported it into the Adobe illustrator and selected what we wanted cut versus engraved. Most of the smaller details were engraved while the bigger shapes got cut.
this is the first design I made and laser cut. for the laser cut we used cardboard.
Unfortunately my first time laser cutting it was unsuccessful and it caught on fire because the designs were too close for the cardboard. For my first print I will use wood instead of cardboard.
I fixed all of the flaws from the first design then I sized up my project by 20% to make it bigger. I printed this in wood using the laser cutter.
1st prototype: thits is my very first successful prototype. It ended up being much too small at 5 by 5 inches. Also I did not enjoy the tree trunk that wasn't fully cut out so i decided to fully cut the whole tree and star out. As well the gingerbread man was only engraved and I wanted it cut out. i fixed all of the mistakes and made another prototype.
Larry's prototype 1: this is larry's very first prototype. he decided to also make the star bigger and to engrave more items.
Second Prototype: My second prototype turned out decent however I didn't cut out the top half of the star completely and it ripped off half of my gingerbread man. Additionally the circle from the santa hat did not cut out so I had to connect the lines.
Final Product: My final product turned out great and I am happy with it. The tree is cut out nicely and the small details. Larry also finished his design and the engraved items looked great.
this is larry's final design. he only did one prototype before finishing.
Connecting the designs: We needed to connect our designs, so we made 10 three by five centimeter peices of wood and connected our projects.
Final steps: For the final steps we put the light into the fixture and then light it up here are the photos below:
