Science Weeks 6-7
GIS Mapping - A geographic information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store,use, and present all types of geographical (land) data. These often show elevation or height and depth of landforms.
Man Made - Made or caused by human beings (as opposed to occurring or being made naturally) Manmade is artificial.
Prevent - To keep (something) from happening, arising, or occuring.
Devastate - To destroy or ruin (something). Also, to cause (someone) severe and overwhelming shock or grief.
Prototype - A preliminary (before/early) model of something, especially a machine or item being designed for use.
Flood control - Methods are used to reduce or prevent the detrimental effects of flood waters
Reclamation - The process of claiming or taking something back. Getting back to the original shape or being.
Ecosystem - A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment. Where living things exist together.
Science Weeks 4-5
Slow change - Requiring or taking a long time for growing, changing, or occurring.
Rapid change - Performed or occurring during a short amount of time; quick: a rapid transformation.
Volcano - A mountain or hill, typically cone shaped, having a crater or vent through which lava, rock fragments, hot vapor, and gas erupt from the earth's crust.
Vegetation - Plants considered collectively together, especially those found in a particular area or habitat.
Sediment - The sand/dirt material from a liquid that settles to the bottom of an area.
Delta - A piece of land in the shape of a triangle or fan made by deposits of mud and sand at the mouth of a river.
Evaluate -To form an idea of the amount, number, or value of something, to study and assess.
Science Weeks 1-3
Weathering - The breaking down of Earth material including rock and soil.
Mechanical Weathering - A process of breaking rock into pieces but not changing the chemical makeup of rocks. Water, wind, and tree roots can cause mechanical weathering.
Chemical Weathering - A process where the chemical composition of the rock changes. Rainwater, especially acid rain, causes chemical weathering.
Erosion - The movement of sediments produced by weathering. Water, glaciers, and wind move sediment from place to place.
Deposition - The actual dropping off of sediments which were moved from one place to another. This can change the surface of the Earth looks over time.
Constructive force - These forces build up and add to Earth’s surface by forming things like mountains and land masses.
Destructive force - These forces also shape the surface of the Earth, but they do so by breaking down and wearing away mountains and other landforms.
Structure - Something that was built or arranged in a definite way.
Acid Rain - Rain that has been made acidic by certain pollutants in the air.
Social Studies Weeks 6-7
Great Western Cattle Trail - was used during the 19th century for movement of cattle and horses to markets in eastern and northern states. This trail was longer, and lasted longer than the Chisholm trail.
Chisholm Trail - The Chisholm Trail was a trail used in the post-Civil War era to drive cattle overland from ranches in Texas to Kansas railheads (to be put on trains to travel East).
The Black Cowboys - Made up of mostly former slaves, Black cowboys in the American West accounted for up to 25 percent of workers in the range-cattle industry from the 1860s to 1880s.
Agriculture - the science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool, and other products.
Expansion - the act of increasing (something) in size or volume or quantity or scope including as a movement across land.
Crops - A cultivated plant that is grown as food, especially grain, fruit, or vegetables.
Supply - The amount of something available to be consumed, also making something available for market.
Demand - To ask for directly and or the need and desire for something specific.
Social Studies Weeks 4-5
Citizen - A legally recognized inhabitant of a particular country, state, town, or city.
Right - A moral or legal entitlement to have or obtain something or to act in a certain way.
Responsibility - The "responsibility of a citizen" is made up of actions and attitudes associated with democratic governance and social participation.
Due process - Fair treatment through the normal judicial system (right to trial), especially as a citizen's entitlement.
Amend - To change, make better; improve. To modify or make changes to something.
U.S. Constitution - A document that embodies the fundamental laws and principles by which the United States is governed.
Bill of Rights - First 10 Amendments to the Constitution.
14th Amendment - ratified in 1868, defining national citizenship and forbidding the states to restrict the basic rights of citizens or other persons. nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law
Social Studies Weeks 1-3
Conflict - A disagreement or argument about something important.
Culture - The beliefs, customs, arts, etc. of a particular society, group, place, or time.
Migration - The movement of persons from one country or locality to another. The periodic passage of groups of animals (especially birds or fishes) from one region to another for feeding or reproducing.
Technology - The application of scientific knowledge for advancement purposes, especially in industry. Machines/equipment developed from the use of scientific knowledge.
Government - The ruling body of a nation, state, or community.
History - The study of past events, particularly in human affairs. As a whole, the series of past events dealing with people, places, and things.
Geography - The study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere, and of human activity as it affects and is affected by these, including the distribution of populations and resources, land use, and industries.
Economics - The study of how a society's resources are shared, and how goods and services are produced (created), distributed (sent out), and consumed (used).
Politics - The activities, actions, and policies (laws/rules) that are used to gain and hold power in a government or to influence a government. Also, a person's opinions about the management of government.
