Time to yourself

Do not dedicate all of your time to just homework, as there are always other things to do that can be done in your spare time, such as drawing something that you are personally interested in or just want to.

Exercise #1 - Reading

In school, you are supposed to read from the textbook to learn about whatever material that the teacher is covering, take notes, and then read it over for the purpose of reviewing what you may have not written down. However, you can still read a book that you enjoy in your free time when you are not doing your homework or reading the textbooks. Instead of having to read about the same subject repeatedly and stressing yourself out, go read one of your books in the free time that there is to calm yourself down and have a clear mind for later on in the day. It'll help you plow through your work while learning about the content described in them.

Exercise #2 Playing Video Games

For some people, blowing off some steam from being stressed or for taking a break is to play video games, which can be on your computer or a console that you own - such as mainstream games. Taking part in some games as the main character is very relaxing for some people, as exploring side quests or the main story of the game is very engaging, and going through any trials such as combat or puzzles. However, some video games are centered around combat, playing it smart, and that gets people to forget whatever they have on their shoulders at the time, relieving their stress as it helps to calm down. It seems that when playing a video game that involves violence can really relieve your stress after finishing your homework, as when fighting an enemy, you can release your anger and stress through combat.

Exercise #3 Drawing/Creating Art

Some of us are interested in drawing various things around us - the environment, people that we know, objects, a room, yourself, creating some fanart for a game that we like, and etc. In our free time, there are many things to draw out there in the world, or we could just take something from our imagination and give it a physical form on the paper by drawing it, which is very relaxing as we get to just sit down and enjoy creating something of your own. After some time of working, if an interest of yours is in art, then drawing can help lower your stress as it's calming and it can show your emotions. Art is typically a way for people to show their emotions, what they are feeling, which is shown by the way it is drawn, or what colors are used for it, is their way of expressing their feelings about something or someone at that current moment in time.

Exercise #4 Music

With there being great songs out there to listen to on the radio, your computer, or your phone, it's easy to say that music can make your stress go away. After all, the type of music that we listen to is something that we can connect with and enjoy, and all of us have different tastes in music, which can hold some kind of special meaning to us because of how it sounds or the lyrics. The message that they hold can be inspirational, or just correspond with whatever you are feeling at that moment in time, and you can sing it to vent your emotions out. Or, you could use it to tune out everything that is around you, and there are many other different reasons that this may relieve your stress.

Exercise #5 Youtube Videos

Creating or watching a Youtube video is something that you can do in your free time to let out your emotions, as you react or do some commentary as you record the video, where you can tell other people about your emotions using your videos/blogs, or comments and concerns for others. On here, as you watch videos from channels that you enjoy watching, the pressure that you feel on both your body and soul can be lifted because you enjoy some of them. Although, remember to not stay on this site for long on your computer as you can quickly find yourself overwhelmed by the desire to keep watching videos, and not do your work at all.

Exercise #6 - Sleep

Sleep is when the body falls asleep to rest and to gather energy after a long day of work that has stressed out both the body and mind, rendering you unconscious. While you are unconscious, you don't really have to worry as you are asleep and the brain can rest up, although you have to make sure you wake up. Otherwise, you may find that time has passed more quickly than you had expected, and there isn't much time to do your homework. For example, my sister is so stressed(and tired) from staying up so late at night that she goes to sleep at around 4 PM and sleeps until 8 PM, when my mother wakes her up.

Exercise #7 - The Stimulating Breath

  • Inhale and exhale rapidly through your nose, keeping your mouth closed but relaxed. Your breaths in and out should be equal in duration, but as short as possible. This is a noisy breathing exercise.
  • Try for three in-and-out breath cycles per second. This produces a quick movement of the diaphragm, suggesting a bellows. Breathe normally after each cycle.
  • Do not do for more than 15 seconds on your first try. Each time you practice the Stimulating Breath, you can increase your time by five seconds or so, until you reach a full minute.

If done properly, you will feel invigorated, comparable to the heightened awareness you feel after a good workout. You should feel the effort at the back of the neck, the diaphragm, the chest and the abdomen. Try this diaphragmatic breathing exercise the next time you need an energy boost and feel yourself reaching for a cup of coffee.

P.S. While doing those things will most definitely relieve stress, doing too much activity of them will most definitely have harmful side affects. Be sure that you are not doing an exceedingly high amount of those things, especially those that require electronics. Those things are the reason I now wear glasses.
