PTHS Four Square Rules
The game of Four Square is ideally played with groups of 6-8, but any number of players can be accommodated.
Players enter the game by way of the Jack square(1). The Ace square(4) is the highest ranked square. When a higher square is vacated the players in lower squares will move up.
The exterior lines are considered in bounds, the area outside of them is out of bounds. The interior lines are considered out of bounds.
The Ace serves the ball by dropping the ball to the floor, letting it bounce, and hitting it to the Jack with an underhand swing. All service begins with the Ace to the Jack.
Once the ball bounces in the Jack square, the Jack may hit the ball overhand or underhand to any square. Now, full play begins.
Players may hit the ball underhand or overhand to any square. A carry, double hit, or hit out of bounds will result in a player being out.
When the ball is hit into the air by a player it is a "free ball" and can be hit by any player. Once the ball bounces in a square, that player is obligated to hit the ball next.
Example: If the Queen(2) hits the ball into the King Square(3), the King must hit the ball next. If another player hits it, that player is out. If the King can't get, it the King is out.
When a player is out they go to the back of the line. The player first in line enters the Jack Square. The Ace serves to the Jack and full play begins again.
