We need to open mathematics for students. Mathematics is an open, growth, learning subject and we should encourage students to think of themselves as mathematicians. Students need to identify patterns and connections to the real world by using mathematical modeling. In doing so we need to value depth over speed, encourage intuition and freedom of though, and teach creatively and visually.

It is important to set up positive norms in class, teach about how the brain can grow, and the benefits of adopting a growth mindset. All of these can be used together to help students build a mathematical mindset. The links focus on things the students can view or read in order to being open to struggle and failure in a mathematics classroom.
