About the Artist:
Julia Bond is a designer, dancer, creative, and activist. Her work and life have been rooted in expressing how vast and non-monolithic the Black experience is. She has worked for brands like Amazon and Under Armor and is currently an Assistant Designer at Adidas. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Bond now lives in Portland, Oregon, where she works as an apparel designer for Men's Originals Products. While at Adidas, Bond wrote an open letter to her employer demanding the brand be held accountable by acknowledging and apologizing for systemic racism within its walls. The letter called on Adidas to "issue a public apology for the racism and discrimination they have openly enabled and perpetuated across the brand." In addition, she leads a protest at the Portland Adidas headquarters every day at noon until the brand chooses to acknowledge the problem they are trying to fix.
Bond infuses her Cincinnati roots into her styling, garment construction, and design to bring projects to life. Her ongoing project, OTHERLY, seeks to visualize the Black experience through color. With that, there comes so much within the vastness that is Blackness. These one-off pieces question the delusion of white supremacy. Black lives matter, and that means every Black life. OTHERLY seeks to visualize all of those skin tonalities that have been otherwise "othered."
