About the Artist:

Photo of the artist Annie Schutz.

Annie Schutz is a Black queer woman living in Portland, Oregon. In 2020, she began leading, organizing, supporting, and using photography to put out the Black narrative of what is happening in the world right now. She is finishing her senior year at Portland State University and completing Interdisciplinary Studies for an Arts & Letters degree, with minors in Film Studies and Communications. Along with sports photography, she is currently the lead photographer and photo editor at the PSU Vanguard and is an active freelance photojournalist for the Willamette Week, Portland Mercury, and ACLU.

Schutz takes a large range of photos at protests and events relating to the Black Lives Matter movement and creates collages out of them. She wants people to see Black joy, Black pain, Black rage, the Black community, and Black solidarity. She makes sure to focus on what the movement is about, Black people. She covers events ignored by major news outlets, such as those dedicated to education, providing and distributing resources, and aiding community members.
