Through the alchemy of intention, AnAkA’s multimedia practice reconnects the Self to ancient wisdoms severed from personal and collective bloodlines. For 8 years, AnAkA has cultivated an ethnographic project entitled AKTIV8: an original archive of photos, films, music, dance, tattoos and herbal creations. AKTIV8 is created with the intention to document and strengthen the heartbeat of the Afro Indigenous movements, practices and rituals of our current time. In order to share and exchange this cultivation of sacred wisdom, AKTIV8 archive presents itself as shapeshifting experiential portals: a physical space woven with AKTIV8 sounds, movement and visuals.

For this particular project, AnAkA returns to the trees that raised her here in Portland OR to perform for them as an act of gratitude. In AKTIV8 Portal (2) you will witness AnAkA perform original works for nature, as a way to give thanks to the Ancestors, the trees, the waters, the air, the soil and the ether.

AnAkA is a director, photographer, dancer, musician, tattoo artist, herbalist, archivist and portal curator. Previous clients for visual direction work include Levi’s, Diesel Jeans, State Farm, Vogue, Pitchfork, American Express, RCA Records, and Netflix. AnAkA has curated solo portal exhibitions in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa, Los Angeles, and New York City. They shared AKTIV8 Portal works as a commissioned artist at The Shed NY, Chale Wote Festival, Portland Art Museum and Lagos Photo Festival.

AnAkA is additionally a co-founder and administrator for the Black Oregon Land Trust.

Double-exposure photograph by AnAkA shows two people in the woods wearing white flowy gowns and yellow flowers. In front of them is a small source of fire, and different plants and flowers.
This is a in-camera made double exposure when I was creating in Nairobi, Kenya. On the left is a portrait of Wuod Baba, an artist who only raps in his native language of Luo. You can see that music video here: www.youtube.com/watch. In the center is the Black American music duo OSHUN. This was their first time in Africa so I knew we needed to make a music video! Photograph by AnAkA taken on a beach focusing on a person with their entire body covered by a brown vestiment. In the background, there are three people wearing white.
