About the Artist:
Amirah Chatman is a 27-year-old Black queer artist living in Portland, Oregon, to pursue higher education in art and be closer to nature. She is a figurative artist and has had work displayed throughout Phoenix, Arizona. She specializes in dry media, primarily charcoal and chalk pastel, to depict people of color, cloudscapes, and fruit. Chatman grew up in Phoenix, where the demographic is predominantly white and Latinx, so she dealt with a lot of cultural isolation and racism as a child and into her young adulthood. However, in spite of the prejudice and discrimination thrown her way, she is overcoming obstacles daily and creating art. Chatman is currently exploring visual ideologies of Heaven and existence, placing her figures in turbulent intangible locations.
Chatman makes art for the viewer who has both walked in her shoes and has had to run in them. Her thematic concerns center on people of color, fruit, and clouds. Because Black and Brown people are incredibly underrepresented in fine art, she aims to broaden perspective and highlight them from a lens of familiarity.
