Workshops

Workshops for research computing resources

Research Computing workshops are intended to help you understand the range of resources available to the campus community and to assist you in getting started and working effectively on PSU supported systems. These primary audience for these workshop are students working in compute intensive areas, but all students and faculty are welcome.

Introduction to the Research Computing Ecosystem

Computing from Excel-scale to Exascale. Laptop to supercomputers. We take a dive into the range of computational resources available through PSU and through public and Commercial Cloud providers. We will discuss which resources may best meet your needs, how to use these resources, and how to work them remotely. We will discuss Cloud Computing options and things to consider when using public and commercial Cloud resources. Approx. 50 minutes.

Introduction to High Performance Computing (HPC) systems

This is an in-depth discussion of the high performance computing resources available on campus, how to access them, and how to get started using the campus HPC systems. We will discuss why HPC systems are useful, how the systems are built, the terminology used for HPC systems, using Linux environment modules for accessing pre-built software, what is a job scheduler and how to use it. Users who have requested access in advance will have an opportunity to do hands on "getting started" exercises. Approx. 1 1/2hr.

Introduction to Command-Line Linux

The foundation for what you need to getting working efficiently from the Linux command line interface (CLI). This will include an overview of the Centos environment includes accessing systems with secure shell (SSH), copying files to and from remote systems, navigating directory structures and working with files, building software, working with compilers and interpreters, and working with system monitoring commands. Approx. 1 1/2hr.

Schedule

All workshops will be presented remotely using Zoom. You will need to authenticate with your Odin ID. You can do this at https://pdx.zoom.us.
