System Patching Policy

How to Avoid Issues during System Patching

Every [UPDATE], OIT-RC's systems are taken down, patched, and restarted.

If this conflicts with a long running job, the job's user must go through these steps to be considered for an exception to the patch on the hardware they are using. If text is in brackets/italics, then it is meant to be replaced and filled in by the user.

Finding and submitting the IT Help form:

      1. Click the "General Service Help Desk" link at the very right bottom of this page.

      2. Click "Common Requests."

      3. Click "Get IT Help."

Fill out the newly displayed form with the following:

      1. Summary of Request: "Research Computing - Patching Exception Request: [list the system you are using, such as the Windows Compute Intensive Systems or general Linux server Agamede]"

      2. Fill in your name and Odin username.

      3. In the description, please include these details.

          • Start with: "I have a long running job on the Research Computing's system [list the system you are using, and be sure to include what particular nodes you are using, if applicable]. I would like this job to not get stopped by any upcoming patches until my job completes. My job will most likely be completed by [put an estimated date of completion, and you can put a range of dates]."

          • Add any additional information you feel is relevant.

      4. Fill the email confirmation text box.

      5. Hit "Send"
