Design & Communication Graphics

An example of using formative assessment

Learning Outcomes

Design and Communication Graphics Syllabus Objectives selected, for the purpose of this exercise.

Students should be able to:

ii) apply the principles of both plane and descriptive geometries to the solution of a variety of concrete and abstract graphic problems

iii) produce neat and accurate drawings that comply with internationally recognised standards and conventions

Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to:

  • apply their understanding of geometric principles to solve problems

  • solve real-context and abstract problems using graphical techniques

  • investigate and apply the principles of plane and descriptive geometries to create solutions

Sample Learning Intention

From the Learning Outcome:

Students will be able to:

Understand the geometric principles that apply when solving problems in Design & Communication Graphics

Sharing Success Criteria

The following Success Criteria are shared or co-created with students:

  • Identify and photograph one strong example from the built environment which can be used to demonstrate a geometric principle.

  • State the geometric principle which you wish to focus on.

  • Execute a technical drawing solution to demonstrate the geometric principle of interest.

  • Label clearly the geometric principle on your technical drawing.

  • Label on the drawing another geometric principle which is evident.

Distributing the assignment

The use of google classroom is of benefit in steering students through formative assessment. In this example the success criteria are distributed along with the assignment, allowing students to clearly see what is required of them in order to succeed.

The worksheet, in PowerPoint format, allows teachers to place comprehensive comments on students' work, as they develop their ideas on the various sections of the worksheet.

Teacher providing feedback

Note in this example how the comments appear using this feature in PowerPoint.

The teacher feedback feature provides for tailored, and IEP (individual education plan) support. As a work in progress, the student is given the opportunity to act on the comments provided, thus deepening their learning.

Completed piece of work

Through reinforcing the success criteria by teacher comments and providing compartments within the worksheet where the students can concentrate on each criteria, the student is able to raise the standard of his/her work.
