How did the Treaty of Utrecht lead to changes in North America? This treaty was signed to end the War of Spanish Succession, which was fought in Europe after the King of Spain died, leaving no heir to the throne. It grew into another in a long series of conflicts between the French and British, as France wanted to take over Spain, a move that was not accepted by Britain or the rest of Europe. The War of Spanish Succession was fought to defend the autonomy of Spain and protect it from France. France lost the war and as a result, had to give concessions to Britain, including some of the land they held in New France (now Canada).
