High School Counselor

The primary goal of the school counselor is to promote student academic achievement.

The counselor does not provide discipline.  A counselor is an adult who acts as a student’s advocate.  An advocate is someone who listens to what you have to say and helps you develop solutions. It does not mean they can solve the problem for you; it does mean that you have a safe place you can go when you aren’t sure what to do.  We provide academic, career and EQ skill development for ALL students.

School counselors provide services to students, parents, school staff and the community in accordance with the American School Counselor Association National Model (www.ascanationalmodel.org).

Services are delivered through classroom instruction, individual support meetings, group sessions, and teacher and parent consultation.  Services include, but are not limited to:

·       Interpersonal skills (social/emotional support)

·       School success skills (academic support)

·       Career awareness

·       Parent and Teacher consultation

**Please note that counseling in the school setting must be brief in nature. The school counselor maintains a referral list if outside therapy is needed or desired.

Confidentiality Statement

The information students share with the counselor is private and kept confidential. The counselor must get the student’s permission to share the information with parents or teachers. There are exceptions or conditions when the counselor must break confidentiality.

·       If the counselor believes the student is in danger

·       If the counselor believes the student presents a danger to others.

·       If the counselor believes the student presents a danger to themselves.

·       If a judge requires the counselor to share the information.

·       If the counselor needs to consult with someone else to help the student.
