Assignments for Week 5/4/20-5/8/20

Reading and Writing Assignments for the Week of 5/4/20-5/8/20

Monday 5/4/20

  1. This week you will be working on a project for the end of our mystery unit. The project is broken up into sections, one each day, but if you want to work ahead, feel free. For this project you will be designing your own mystery theme park! This is going to be so fun! I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

    1. Mystery Theme Park Project: The Overview

      1. This mystery theme park will be built around the mystery stories we have read during this unit. Basically, you will be designing mystery rides and attractions based on the significant plot events from the stories. You will also be designing dining restaurants and souvenir shops based on the characters from the stories. You will put it all together as a theme park map to turn in at the end of the week. You can create this map on the computer and attach the finished file to the assignment in Google Classroom to turn in. Or if you would prefer, you can also draw out your map by hand and take a picture of it to turn in on Classroom or email me. If you have any questions or problems along the way, let me know.

    2. Mystery Theme Park Project: Part 1

      1. Today you will be thinking of a name for your mystery theme park and planning out the basic layout of your park. Think about how the park flows from one area or attraction to another. You will have to have at least 3 restaurants or places to eat, 3 shops where your customers can buy souvenirs, and 10 rides or attractions. Your finished park map will also need a key or legend, telling me about each item. Today is a brainstorming day. Take a look at the following theme park maps for inspiration:

        1. Elitch Gardens Theme and Water Park: https://www.elitchgardens.com/plan-a-visit/park-map/

        2. Disneyland Park and California Adventure: https://disneyland.disney.go.com/maps/

  2. Login to vocabulary.com and practice the unit 25 words for your quiz on Friday.

  3. Work on your individually assigned grammar practice activities on quill.org.

  4. Keep reading for your reading goal. 25 points on AR is due by May 15th! 12 days and counting...

Tuesday 5/5/20

  1. Mystery Theme Park Project: Part 2

    1. Today you are planning out the restaurants or places to eat in your mystery theme park. You must have at least 3 restaurants or places to eat, and each one needs to be centered around a character from the mystery stories we read during this unit. Start by choosing a character from one of the stories. Think about what he or she might like to eat and why, and then build your restaurant from there. For example: Grover from Percy Jackson liked to eat tin cans, so you could make a canned soup restaurant where people could order a can of soup, and then the cans could be “recycled” in the goat farm out behind the restaurant. The restaurant could be called “Grover’s Soup Paradise.” Get the idea? Now it is your turn. Design at least 3 places to eat in your mystery theme park.

    2. If you can’t remember all of the mystery stories we read during this unit, here is a list with links in case you need to go back and reread any of them for inspiration.

      1. “In the Fog”: (This was in our textbook. I was unable to find a link online, but it was the play about the doctor who got lost in the fog one night near Gettysburg. Do you remember?)

      2. “The Hitchhiker”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Swzh0K9pyrU

      3. “Ruthless”: https://my23.sd23.bc.ca/class/jlimk66/AnalyticsReports/Story%202%20-%20Ruthless.pdf

      4. “The Monkey’s Paw”: https://www.kyrene.org/cms/lib/AZ01001083/Centricity/Domain/2259/The%20Monkeys%20Paw%20-%20text.pdf

Wednesday 5/6/20

  1. Mystery Theme Park Project: Part 3

    1. Today you are planning out the shops in your mystery theme park. You must have at least 3 shops where your customers can buy souvenirs, and each one needs to be centered around a character from the mystery stories we read during this unit. Start by choosing a character from one of the stories. Think about what he or she might like to wear, read, listen to, or play with in his or her free time, and then build your shop from there. For example: Grover from Percy Jackson was a satyr. So, you could design a shop that sells furry pants, horn headbands, funny satyr t-shirts with catchy slogans, and cologne to cover up that wet goat smell. The shop could be called “Satyr Style.” Get the idea? Now it is your turn. Design at least 3 places to shop in your mystery theme park.

    2. If you need to go back and reread any of the stories from this unit, see the list under Tuesday’s plan on this document.

  2. Practice unit 25 on vocabulary.com.

  3. Work on your individually assigned grammar practice activities on quill.org.

Thursday 5/7/20

  1. Mystery Theme Park Project: Part 4

    1. Today you are planning out the rides or attractions in your mystery theme park. You must have at least 10 rides or attractions, and each one needs to be centered around a main plot event from the mystery stories we read during this unit. Start by choosing an important plot event from one of the stories. Think about how to represent that event in a ride or attraction form. Should it be a water ride, roller coaster, merry-go-round, or bumper cars? Why? Then build your ride from there. For example: In Percy Jackson, Percy, Annabeth, and Grover battle Medusa. You could represent this battle with a dark, twisting roller coaster filled with mirrors, snakes, and surprised looking garden statues. The roller coaster could be called “Medusa’s Garden Adventure.” Get the idea? Now it is your turn. Design at least 10 rides or attractions in your mystery theme park.

    2. If you need to go back and reread any of the stories from this unit, see the list under Tuesday’s plan on this document.

  2. Practice unit 25 on vocabulary.com.

  3. Work on your individually assigned grammar practice activities on quill.org.

Friday 5/8/20

  1. Mystery Theme Park Project: Part 5

    1. Today you are finalizing your mystery theme park map and turning it in. Like I said before, you can create your map on the computer and turn in the file on Google Classroom. You can also draw your map by hand and take a picture of it to turn in on Classroom or email me. I am fine with either format, whichever is going to be the best for you. Remember, your park map needs to have your mystery theme park name, 3 restaurants or places to eat, 3 shops, 10 rides or attractions, and a key that tells me a little information about each item. It should be colorful and look super fun. Make me want to visit your theme park! This is your chance to be creative. I can’t wait to see your final creation!

  2. Complete the vocab quiz for unit 25 that I sent to you this morning through your email.

  3. Make sure you have completed your individualized grammar practice activities for this week on quill.org.

  4. Listen to the next episode of The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel (Audio link: https://www.marspatel.com/?page_id=2 ) We are on Season 1 Episode 7 and it is about 15 minutes long.

    1. After listening to the podcast, answer the following questions with complete sentences on a Google doc and submit your answer on Google classroom.

      1. Who is “Lost in London”? What is her real name and what has happened to her? Answer this question with at least 1 complete sentence.

      2. Explain how the title The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel comes true in this episode with at least 1 complete sentence.
