Monday 4/27/20

  1. If you have not already done so, take the AR quiz for The Face on the Milk Carton. It is worth 6 points if you get all of the questions correct. When it asks for the monitor password, ask your mom or dad to type it in for you. Let me know if you need help.

  2. Today, you are going to start writing your essay for The Face on the Milk Carton. You will write one paragraph a day, and then turn the whole finished essay in on Friday. If you would like to work ahead, you can. But remember, your finished essay is officially due by Monday! Here is some information to help you write your introduction paragraph. You can use the outline I have provided and fill in the blanks.

    1. Title of Essay: The Elements of Suspense in The Face on the Milk Carton

    2. Introduction paragraph: Authors use literary elements to create suspense in stories. Caroline B.   1. Today you will write the first body paragraph of your essay. You can use the outline I have provided and fill in the blanks.

    1. Body Paragraph #1: The first literary element Cooney uses to build suspense is _____.   1. Today you will write the conclusion paragraph of your essay. You can use the outline I have provided and fill in the blanks.

    1. Conclusion Paragraph: Suspense in a story is what makes readers, young and old, want to _____. Caroline B. Cooney is a master at building suspense in her novel The Face on the Milk Carton through her use of literary elements.

  2. Now that your essay is finished, you need to read through it one more time and edit it before you turn it in. Here is an editing checklist you can use. You need to be able to answer yes to all of the questions before you turn your essay in.

    1. Is my essay in Times New Roman, 12 point font, and double-spaced?

    2. Did I read through my essay out loud and make sure all of the sentences make sense and sound good?

    3. Did I check to make sure all of the sentences I wrote are complete sentences?

    4. Do I have two pieces of evidence/quotes in each body paragraph?

    5. Did I cite my pieces of evidence/quotes?

    6. Does each body paragraph make sense when I read it, like one single unit that is proving how Cooney used that one literary element to build suspense?

    7. Did I make sure I did not use any first or second person words in my essay? Words to eliminate include I, me, my, we, you, your, our, us...

  3. Once you are happy with your completed essay, you need to submit your final copy on Google Classroom.

  6. Listen to the next episode of The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel (Audio link: https://www.marspatel.com/?page_id=2 ) We are on Season 1 Episode 6 and it is about 15 minutes long.

    1. After listening to the podcast, answer the following questions with complete sentences on a Google doc and submit your answer on Google classroom.

      1. What is the result of Mars “poking the tiger” of Oliver Pruitt last time on the video he posted online? (Hint: There are two separate things that happen to Mars as a direct result of his previous action.) Answer this question with at least one complete sentence.

      2. How does Caddie cause a distraction at school so Mars can sneak away unnoticed? Answer this question with at least one complete sentence.

      3. What do Mars and his friends find at the abandoned warehouse? (Hint: It’s delivered!) Answer this question with at least one complete sentence.
