GivePulse is a robust community engagement platform used to share and promote service opportunities, as well as track student hours & impacts. PCC uses GivePulse to track community engagement, support CBL classes, and manage community partnerships.
GivePulse allows the CBL Program to:
Manage our community partnerships while also being a shared and searchable database for community engagement opportunities
Manage CBL courses - the platform syncs nightly with banner to keep course listings and enrollment up to date
That includes easier collection and reporting of data on student impacts at various levels - individual, by course, campus, term, year, location, type of cause, etc
In addition, it provides tools for faculty to manage their individual courses and cbl components.
This robust community engagement platform is used locally (PSU, University of Portland, and Lewis and Clark) and nationally by colleges and universities to share and promote service opportunities, as well as track student hours & impacts. Through GivePulse, our program will be able to better support and highlight the impact you, students, and community partners have through community-based learning projects and assignments.
GivePulse for PCC features Single Sign On through MyPCC.
Again its searchable database of Community Partners and opportunities.
Its also is a CBL course management tool. So it allows you as faculty, and us as an institution to track Student Community Engagement and report those kinds of Course Impacts.
It also automatically generates a Community Engagement Transcript when students or faculty utilize the platform for their classes.
All students engaging in in person activities will be required to utilize GivePulse, and it may be simpler for you to require those students engaging in online/virtual activities as well.
Again, it is important that you emphasize the use of GivePulse, because students’ impacts will allow the CBL Program to provide Risk Management with information in regards to any COVID-19 Exposure incidents
An "impact" is used as an umbrella term to describe all potential forms of community engagement. An impact most often represents volunteer hours served, but can also be used to track money donated, goods donated, training received, or a generic other. Other I would say is a good option for tracking deliverables where time might be hard to track like the creation of a brochure, editing a website, or building a tinyhouse.
Impacts provide data for reporting purposes, to get feedback on the quality of the experience, and to better understand the impact of students efforts as part of your course.
For students who plan to complete a CBL assignment/project will need to register with the CBL Program. In general, all registrations will be approved, but the CBL Program will review them to check if students need assistance.
The purpose for registering is to:
Provide CBL and Instructors with approximate number of students who will be engaging in CBL & what they will potentially be doing
If students are unsure, CBL can follow up and provide guidance to identify opportunities
Provide CBL Program with information needed to set up identified Community Partners in GivePulse
And allow for targeted communication and notification to students
You will be provided with a link to the CBL Student Registration that can be shared with students & it will be posted to your course in GivePulse. Here is a demo course so you can see what the registration looks like.
When students register, they will be asked to provide information about their (*required questions)

In conjunction with registering, students should identify and contact their community partner to make arrangements for community engagement and review the CBL assignment/project parameters.
This includes ensuring their community partner agrees to have a designated supervisor/verifier that will follow CBL’s Exposure Communication Protocols for COVID-19
Once student’s registration is approved, they will receive instructions and a CRN specific link to submit the Community-Based Learning Agreement
Its is important to reiterate to students that they will not be able to start community engagement activities until their Learning Agreement is acknowledged by the instructor and community partner
More details about the Community-Based Learning Agreement are covered in this section
Students will need to report their activities by adding impacts in GivePulse
The great thing about the GivePulse platform is that the community partner will be automatically notified by email to verify the student’s reported impacts.
As instructors, you will also be notified as students add impacts and those impacts are verified. You will also have the ability to verify those impacts.
These impacts are also used by the CBL Program to provide Risk Management with information in regards to any COVID-19 Exposure Communication
