Career Technical Education (CTE) is an umbrella term used to describe educational programs that focus on providing students with the knowledge, skills, and practice they need to succeed in specific career pathways or industries.
CTE programs can range from courses that provide students with entry-level job skills to programs that lead to industry-recognized credentials or professional certifications. These programs provide students of all ages with access to training and knowledge needed to succeed in their future careers.
In middle schools, CTE programs help introduce students to possible career pathways, get develop interest in options for high-school courses, and even possibly career pathways. Career Technical Education experiences provide students with real-world skills that make them career and college ready.
Here in California, the California Department of Education (CDE) oversees and supports CTE programs through the Career and Technical Education Pathways Initiative. This initiative provides funding for the development of CTE programs and partnerships with industry, as well as technical assistance to help schools and districts implement effective CTE programs. The CDE states that technical education is important for various reasons, including:
Reducing achievement gaps: CTE programs bridge academic concepts to the real world. This can motivate students who may be disengaged from traditional teaching, and help them see the relevance of studying.
Supporting college and future career readiness: CTE programs are specifically designed to give kids hands-on experience in a particular field to develop the technical and soft skills they need to succeed.
Meeting the needs of the workforce: CTE programs are designed to equip students participants with the knowledge and skill set neded to succeed in high-demand, high-skill, and high-wage occupations.
Fostering equity and access: CTE programs provide opportunitites for underrepresented students to enter highly demanded high-paying jobs, ensuring that all students have a chance to succeed in their interests.
