Trauma Informed Care from a Behavioral Perspective: Tips for Teachers
September 25, 2024 ~ 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Given the prevalence of trauma in the general population, trauma-informed care (TIC) has come to the forefront of many models of human service delivery. The elevated risks of trauma in special populations, including those with developmental disabilities or those residing in out-of-home care, have also influenced the TIC agenda. As educators are charged with creating environments to meet the needs of a diverse student body, including those who have experienced adverse childhood events (ACEs), increasing school personnel’s knowledge and skills regarding TIC is essential in supporting students with complex histories. Drawing on the TIC and behavior analytic literatures, as well as interviews with children and adolescents who have experienced substantial childhood trauma, Dr. Austin will define the core commitments of TIC through a behavior analytic lens. She will explain the potential benefits of TIC and provide practical guidance on how educators might engage with TIC commitments in their classrooms.

Acceptance Commitment Training in Schools with Educators and Students: Part 1
November 13, 2024 ~ 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
During this session, the presenter will discuss Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) which increases psychological flexibility by building skills to increase awareness of ourselves and our contexts, openness to our emotions, and engagement in valued pursuits even (especially) when we are experiencing distress. ACT is based in the same principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) that inform the Functional Behavioral Assessment conducted to develop the Positive Behavior Support Plan (PBSP) for an Individual Education Plan (IEP). ACT integrates training in mindfulness and acceptance of thoughts and feelings with strategies for behavior change that help individuals move toward doing what they value most in life. The Matrix is a diagrammatic form of ACT, that, when transformed into a verb, “Matrix’ing,” becomes a procedure for conducting functional assessments regarding the behaviors of individuals, that is, for investigating the contextual variables influencing the occurrence of outer behaviors and inner reactions. In the first part of this two-session sequence, the ACT Matrix will be experientially introduced in the service of helping educators manage their emotional reactivity more effectively and gain insight into their students’ behavior. In the second session in this sequence, the focus will shift to exploring ways for incorporating ACT into a Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework.
