Carpentry

Objectives of grades 9 and 10

The 9th and 10th grade Carpentry course is project-based. Students enrolled in this course will be instructed in the following skills:

  • Safety
  • MSDS (material safety data sheets; right-to-know)
  • planning and drawing
  • estimating
  • properties of wood and wood products
  • hand tool use and maintenance
  • portable power tool use and care
  • stationary power tool use, care and maintenance
  • stock milling procedures
  • woodworking joinery
  • measuring and testing
  • shop math
  • preparation for finishing
  • finishing
  • students will also receive the OSHA 10 hour certification related to construction after taking the online course

Projects:

Students are required to construct the following projects: A saw horse, a tool box, a wall cabinet, a table, and any other project required by the instructor. These projects are designed to help the student to learn the above stated skills. The materials to build these required projects are at no cost to the student. Students will be able to build personal projects only after the required projects are completed. All personal projects must be approved by the instructor and paid for by the student before taking them home or before building another personal project. Students are expected to play personal projects on their own time.

Objectives of grades 11 and 12

The 11th and 12th grade carpentry program is a comprehensive competency based course. It prepares students for a career in the residential building industry as framers, roofers, hardwood flooring installers, drywall installation, with some exposure in cabinetry. The course builds a foundation of basic knowledge, skills , attitudes, behaviors, and work habits that are needed to be successful in the industry. Students will be exposed to working together, working safely,m and working with a positive attitude. The students learn in a hands on project based setting. The setting is a residential customers outside job site. Customers projects can include but not limited to: decks, garages, house additions, or a new house.

Students will:

  • have a general knowledge of career opportunities in the carpentry industry
  • be exposed to safe handling of common power tools, both pneumatic and electric
  • work independently as well as develop teamwork skills to see a project through completion
  • have some understanding to identify and use common construction equipment and tools safely on the job site
  • understand and be exposed to standard carpentry squares and how to use the
  • learn how to square off from a building
  • learn how to layout and frame a square a wall
  • learn how to crown lumber to be used for flooring, ceiling, and or raftering
  • learn raftering and roofing basics
  • learn siding basics
  • learn window and door hanging basics
  • learn deck building basics and stair basics

Upon completion of the carpentry program, the students will have been exposed to all the required competencies in the Mass State Carpentry Frameworks.

Safety

  • Safety glasses will be worn at all times. The glasses are approved by the school.
  • Work boots will be worn at all times.
  • Any articles of clothing or jewelry that are deemed as unsafe for the shop by the instructor will not be allowed in the shop.
  • No machine is used by a student without first obtaining permission from the instructor.
  • Guards on power tools are to be used at all times.
  • Any set-up on a machine which requires a fixture not supplied with the machine, must be approved by the instructor.
  • Scrap wood should not be left on the floor.
  • Horseplay is not allowed. This includes running, throwing objects, slapping, fighting, teasing, bullying and other types of dangerous behaviors. These actions cause accidents and will not be tolerated and will be dealt with immediately. Consequences will depend upon the action.
