Using Unidentified Sources
Using Unidentified Sources
When should you cite unnamed sources? What are the rules? What should you know or confirm before getting clearance to protect a source’s identity? Are our sources in a position to speak with authority about the subject at hand? Do they have a history of telling the truth? Could they have a motive to shade that truth or even lie? Do they have an axe to grind? Withholding a source’s identity may sometimes be necessary to protect their job, their reputation, perhaps even their safety.
Here are Patch guidelines for when and how to use unidentified sources.
