Substitute Teaching

Most often, your program will require opportunities for you to co-teach/lead teach or interact with students for a period of time in the classroom with your cooperating teacher.   Each university/college education or counseling program varies in requirements for the numbers of hours you are to be in a supervised setting.  Some school programs have you follow Parkway’s calendar and your cooperating teacher’s schedule.

Many college students apply for a SUBSTITUTE CERTIFICATION  through DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education).

Parkway outsources our substitute teachers through Kelly Educational Staffing. (KES)    KES will require you to have a valid Substitute Certification issued by the state of MIssouri.   This link provides information on what you will need to do if interested in becoming a KES substitute teacher.

You may not substitute teach at your assigned location AND be paid by Kelly. (essentially you cannot be getting credit for your program AND be paid at the same time.)  This is referred to as “double dipping” and is a practice not supported by Parkway.

We do recognize on occasion there may be situations which arise where your assistance is beneficial.  If you do substitute teach at your assigned school you should be supervised.  (some examples include: a teacher goes home ill at end of day or your cooperating teacher needs brief coverage).   Again, you may not earn compensation when you fill in these scenarios.

Once you complete your required program hours and your placement has concluded,  you could do a short term or a long term sub assignment through KES  (if you are registered/hired by Kelly). 

(for example:  following Parkway’s 2023-24 academic calendar: if you complete your field placement program 12/8/2023 you could complete a sub assignment (s) and be paid as a Kelly sub until school dismisses for winter break on 12/21/2023)
