Grade 5 & 6 learners make history with orbiting pixel art!
Six learners — Lily Campey, Joshua Salter, Harvey Lester, Mukundi Chikwati, Haydn de Wet, and Emma Campey — made history when their program ran aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Astro Pi Mission Zero Challenge 2025.
Six learners — Lily Campey, Joshua Salter, Harvey Lester, Mukundi Chikwati, Haydn de Wet, and Emma Campey — made history when their program ran aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Astro Pi Mission Zero Challenge 2025.
Collaborating with peers from Greece and Czech Republic, they wrote code that turned ISS light sensor data into colorful pixel art on an 8×8 LED display. Their program earned official ‘flight status’ from the ESA and Raspberry Pi Foundation and orbited Earth above the South Pacific Ocean on 17 May 2025.

Learners received certificates signed by ESA and Raspberry Pi officials, marking the exact time and coordinates their code flew in space.
