A satellite is any object that orbits around a planet, star, or moon. There are two main types: natural satellites, such as Earth’s Moon, and artificial satellites, which are human-made objects launched into orbit to serve a wide range of purposes — from communication and navigation to weather forecasting, scientific research, and space exploration.
Artificial satellites are equipped with antennas, sensors, and power sources (usually solar panels) that allow them to send and receive data. Depending on their mission, they can orbit Earth at different altitudes — Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), or Geostationary Orbit (GEO) — each serving specific scientific, commercial, or defense functions.
The history of satellites began at the dawn of the Space Age. On 4 October 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite. This small, metal sphere — about the size of a beach ball — transmitted simple radio signals back to Earth, but it changed the course of history, marking humanity’s first step into space.
Following Sputnik, the United States launched Explorer 1 in 1958, which discovered the Van Allen radiation belts around Earth. Over the following decades, satellites rapidly evolved in complexity and purpose:
1960s–1970s: Satellites enabled global television broadcasts, improved weather prediction, and advanced navigation systems.
1980s–1990s: The development of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and communication networks revolutionized daily life.
2000s–Present: Modern satellites are smaller, smarter, and more efficient. The rise of CubeSats and microsatellites has made space exploration more accessible to schools, universities, and private companies around the world.
Today, thousands of satellites orbit Earth, supporting nearly every aspect of modern life — from internet access and disaster monitoring to scientific exploration of other planets.
