Dive into Māori language, customs, and culture! In this course, you’ll grow your confidence in speaking te reo, including saying karakia (prayers) and mihimihi (introductions). You’ll also learn about the history and values behind the language. Get involved in fun, hands-on activities, take part in rituals, and connect with your community. The course is taught in both Māori and English.

Identify and understand Māori principles of the language
The year 7 and 8 programme focuses on tuhituhi (writing) and kōrero (speaking) in te reo Māori. Tauira will learn basic sentence structures for reremahi (action sentences), rereāhua (descriptive sentences), and reretau (number sentences). Tauira will gain a deeper understanding of te ao māori through whakataukī (proverbs) and kī waha (sayings) and learn basic whaikōrero to develop understanding of tauparapara, mihimihi, and pepeha.
The year 9 and 10 programme continues to develop skills in tuhituhi and kōrero but has a focus on whakarongo (listening) and pānui (reading). Tauira will learn more complex sentence structures for reremahi (action sentences), rereāhua (descriptive sentences), and reretau (number sentences). Tauira will further their understanding of te ao māori through whakataukī (proverbs) and kī waha (sayings) and learn how to structure topics for whaikōrero.
The year 7 and 8 programme focuses on all aspects of Te Reo Māori; tuhituhi (writing), kōrero (speaking), pānui (reading), whakarongo (listening), mātakitaki (watching), and whakaatu (presenting). Tauira will be introduced to the fundamental skills for each of these aspects to develop a well-rounded understanding of the language. Tauira will gain a deeper understanding of te ao māori through whakataukī (proverbs) and kī waha (sayings) and learn basic whaikōrero to develop understanding of tauparapara, mihimihi, and pepeha.
