Te Ao Haka gives you the chance to learn and explore different parts of haka and Māori performing arts. You’ll get to try things like waiata (songs), mōteatea (chants), haka, and mau rākau (traditional Māori weaponry). You’ll also learn about important tikanga (customs) like karakia (prayers) and pūrākau (traditional stories) as you go.

Tauira learn the fundamental skills of māori performing arts. Tauira focus on takahi, wiriwiri, mahi a ringa, and facial expressions to further their performance ability. Tauira also learn a range of waiata (songs), haka (war chants), and mōteatea (chants) local to the Pāpāmoa and Tauranga area. Along with these skills, tauira gain knowledge of karakia, pūrakau, and tikanga relevant to te ao haka.
Tauira focus on the disciplines of te ao haka, including; waiata (songs), haka (war chants), and mōteatea (chants). Tauira will learn a variety of songs and chants from the Tauranga area, while learning the stories and history of each. Tauira also learn disciplines within mau rakau (māori weaponry) including, ngā āhei (war movements), wero (challenge), and whāwhai (sparring). Along with these disciplines, tauira gain knowledge of karakia, pūrakau, and tikanga relevant to te ao haka.
