In this course, you’ll learn about traditional ways of growing, gathering, and preparing kai (food). Made together with Ngā Pōtiki a Tamapahore, the course helps you understand how food is collected and used in different places like the ocean (moana), rivers (awa), forest (ngāhere), and gardens (māra). You’ll also get to try hands-on skills like fishing, setting eel traps, gardening, as well as seeing how an animal is prepared after it's been harvested, which can include removing the skin and getting it ready to be eaten or used in other ways.
Learning Objectives:
Learn about different Māori practices involved in gathering kai from the māra, moana, awa and ngāhere
Experience different kai gathering techniques based in and around themāra, moana, awa and ngāhere
Identify and gather kai from māra, moana, and ngāhere in accordance with Ngā Pōtiki customs and practices
Travel to several environments including Moana, Ngāhere and Awa
Tauira learn the fundamental skills and knowledge of māori food gathering. Tauira will learn key aspects of mahinga kai including karakia, tikanga, pūrakau, kaitiakitanga, and maramataka. Tauira will explore a range of practical skills relevant to māra (gardens) and tunu kai (cooking). Skills include constructing, maintaining, and harvesting from māra, knot tying, and tunu kai (cooking). Tauira apply these skills to cater for a small group of people.
Tauira further their skills and knowledge of māori food gathering by exploring the moana (ocean) and awa (rivers). Tauira will learn new karakia, tikanga and pūrakau, while delving deeper into kaitiakitanga, and maramataka. Tauira will explore a range of practical skills relevant to the moana (ocean) and awa (rivers) including; constructing and using hīnaki, fishing skills, and shellfish harvesting. Tauira apply these skills to cater for a small group of people.
