This two-week Summer Film Workshop, led by Mr. Jonathan Council, is designed to immerse students in the complete creative process of filmmaking from idea to finished short film. The program is open to students in grades 9-12 and emphasizes hands-on, student-driven learning rather than passive lectures. Students will explore their own ideas, ask questions, experiment creatively, and problem-solve as real filmmakers.
The Summer Film Workshop is structured to reflect how films are actually made: a focused, fast-paced period of screenwriting followed by an extended production and post-production phase. Students will spend half a week developing their screenplay and one and a half weeks turning that script into a completed short film- all wrapping up on Thursday before the holiday weekend!
By the end of the workshop, students will:
Understand the basic components needed in any strong story
Create compelling characters and believable worlds
Learn how to tell a story through plot and structure
Write a short screenplay using proper screenwriting format
Translate a screenplay into a film through planning and collaboration
Work with and direct actors to capture strong performances
Edit footage into a polished final film
