Digital Literacy Instruction. 7th graders researched HIV/AIDS advocates throughout history and wrote letters to their heroes and heroines. In this picture, Ms. Alfieri, our student teacher from Queens College, leads a lesson in collaboration with Ms. J. and Mrs. Balfour. This May, Ms. Alfieri graduates with her library science Masters and leaves OWN. She has been an important part of our community. We wish her all the best in her new career!
Queens Public Library, New York Public Library and Literacy Night. Our school library is a stepping stone for all the amazing libraries in the city. Two public librarians visited us on Literacy Night to help families sign up for library cards. All New Yorkers can borrow print books, e-books and listen to free audiobooks from NYPL and Queens Library. If you get books from both library systems, you double the number of audiobooks you can hear at home with your family. Listening is also reading! You can find books in many languages. Please sign up for library cards online today!

Our Library Reading Nook is Getting Cozier
With student-crafted, hand-sewn bookish cushions on the couch, an acrylic coffee table for crossword puzzles and word searches and a colorful magazine collection, the library is the place to be!
Students collaborate beautifully in the library on all kinds of inquiry projects, including aquaponic gardening. An aquaponic garden is a fish fountain that circulates water to fertilize plants. Students build literacy and collaboration skills through building the garden fountain in the library during their lunch and recess periods.

Students in L&L have been sorting, reogranizing labeling fiction stickers under genres like Mystery, Fantasy and Realistic Fiction. They patiently analyze each book to decide where it belongs and then put a sticker on it so it's easy to find. The students are helping create their own library!

In our library, the librarian and classroom teacher work collaboratively to help students develop research questions and answer them through digital resources and books. We often do research on the computer and using books at the same time! We are a 21st century library that blends technology and print resources seamlessly.
