During this last quarter, our K and 1 students have been expanding on their knowledge of the calendar by telling when their birthday is (ex: 16 de junio), naming seasons and describing their weather. We have also continued to review our prior knowledge of greetings, goodbyes, counting, the alphabet, colors, and shapes through song, games, coloring, and conversational activities.
Second and third grade students have been building their Spanish vocabulary by describing different types of foods, the categories they fall into (fruit, vegetable, etc.), and when you might eat them (breakfast, lunch, dinner).
During this time, students have also focused on using their knowledge of phonics and reading comprehension skills to read and answer questions about food in Spanish.
The fourth and fifth graders have been focusing on asking and answering questions about places in their community, including naming locations, directions, requesting products/services and prices, etc. During this time we also used our prior knowledge about professions to make connections between the names of jobs and the names of the places where the jobs are done.
Students also used their phonics and reading comprehension skills to read a fairy tale (Los Elfos y El Zapatero), as well as read and answer questions about places in the community in Spanish.
Kindergarten and first graders at OWNCS have been building understanding of time and the calendar, including learning the days of the week and months of the year. They have also been reviewing numbers 1-20 and working our way up to 31 so that we will be able to say the full date (por ejemplo: miércoles 23 de abril).
Second and third grade students have been building their Spanish vocabulary by describing different types of homes by name (casa, apartamento), as well as the rooms within them (sala, dorminatorio, baño, etc.) and what those rooms are used for. During this time, students have also focused on using their knowledge of phonics to read and write accurately in Spanish. Students have also participated in spiral review of prior skills, including numbers, colors, greetings, and polite language.
The fourth and fifth graders have been focusing on practical Spanish information, such as personal information (name, last name, date of birth, age, grade/class) and information to ask for and present in case of emergency (school name and address, school phone number, parent/guardian name and phone number, important health information, etc.)
During this time, students have also focused on using their knowledge of phonics to read and write accurately in Spanish. Additionally, they've reviewed prior skills, including numbers, colors, greetings, polite language, and professions.
Our youngest language learners have been building their color and number vocabulary, including describing objects using color and number adjectives with the correct word order. For example: two red books = dos libros rojos. Next, we will add in shape vocabulary.
We recently read a folktale called The Day it Rained Tortillas / El Día Que Llovieron Tortillas in English and Spanish. We’ve also been learning and applying vocabulary to talk about school in Spanish. Additionally, we have been working on increasing our reading skills in Spanish by first pulling out words we already know, then looking for potential cognates.
Students have been learning the names of different jobs and how to describe them in Spanish. For example: The doctor cares for patients = El doctor cuida pacientes. Additionally, we have been working on increasing our reading skills in Spanish by first pulling out words we already know, then looking for potential cognates.
All classes started the year off by establishing age and grade-appropriate expectations for Spanish class, practicing routines, learning basic vocabulary, and building relationships so we can have a great time learning together over these next few months.
In September, all our amazing language learners worked on describing themselves in Spanish. We did this through games, conversation, and a TODO SOBRE MI activity in which students use pictures and Spanish vocabulary.
Hispanic Heritage Month Hispanic Heritage month is a special time dedicated to recognizing the culture, achievements, and contributions made by Hispanic and Latin Americans. To honor this time of the year, all classes learned:
🇨🇷 when this month takes place 🇵🇷
🇲🇽 the difference between Hispanic and Latino 🇳🇮
🇩🇴 the overlap between Hispanic and Latino 🇪🇨
🇨🇴 which countries are Hispanic 🇨🇱
K-2 students also examined the flags of different Hispanic countries, discussing their symbolism, and noted their similarities and differences. 🇻🇪 🇭🇳 🇵🇦 They then drew their own interpretations of some of the flags. 🖍️🧑🎨
3rd-5th graders studied different Hispanic leaders and the impact they have made on the world. They also described them in Spanish using their job titles and applicable adjectives.
