Quarter 3
Aleeza and Jana are members of the Fish Care Team at OWN 1 ES! Ms. J will publish an article in the School Library Journal this May about the connections between aquariums, community-building, inquiry, and literacy!
In the library, we foster a learning community where teachers and students collaborate and exchange ideas.
Book Review Instruction. 5th graders learn how to write and present book talks during Library Time. In this picture, Ms. Alfieri, our student teacher from Queens College, coaches a student in book reviewing in collaboration with Ms. J. This May, Ms. Alfieri graduates with her library science Masters and leaves OWN. She has been an important part of our community. We wish her all the best in her new career!
Our Mathical Book Prize books arrived and are proudly on display! OWN was one of 36 schools nationwide awarded this prize.
Students folded origami pockets to celebrate National Poetry Month in April and prepare for Poem in Your Pocket Day (May 19)! Hands-on activities allow students to learn by doing and creating.
To prepare for Poem in Your Pocket Day: Read poems from the school and public library at home and from Academy of American Poets kids' page. Pick your favorites to bring in on May 19th (or email in advance for printing).

We celebrated the Lunar New Year and Year of the Snake with some picture books about snakes. Books with surprise extra-long unfolding panels are ideal for partner reading! This is a BIG snake skeleton!

Only 36 schools across the country received the Mathical Book Prize for a new math book collection. OWN 1 was one of these winners!

One great part of Library Time is the opportunity for teachers and teaching assistants to get extra one-on-one time with students as the librarian supervises the larger class. It's sweet to witness moments where students and their favorite adults bond over reading together.

Tons of DonorsChoose grants funded! We received grants for books, aquaponic gardening and also small animals such as tadpoles, sea shrimp, snails and butterflies. DonorsChoose is a tax-deductible educational charity and most of the donations came from foundations, philanthropists and generous people we don't know outside the OWN community!

Our February Pillar of the Month is Responsibility. In Amy June Bates' book The Big Umbrella, the umbrella is responsible for protecting, including and loving everyone equally. This magical umbrella can even hold a whole town! Students will discuss how the umbrella’s role in the story teaches us about responsibility and caring for others. It is a great way to connect the theme to both literature and real-life experiences!

During library classes, students are allowed to do something they can't do at home. They write on the furniture! Using our special whiteboard tables, students collaboratively ask questions, write them down and research. Using Time Magazine's Big Book of Why, students pose questions such as "How did cave people evolve language, and what was the first language?"

Our library celebrates inquiry and asking hard questions...including questions that we may never be able to answer! Our imaginations and curiosity are always growing in the library.
In our library, students can borrow books, magazines and...dress up costumes? The library coordinated a costume drive thanks to generous donations from the local nonprofit Materials from the Arts and OWNCS parents, who staffed our costume handout! Imaginative play and dress up can foster literacy and creativity at home.

The OWNCS ES library was a proud recipient of two grants this Quarter! Our first grant was from the Latinx Kid Lit Festival. The second grade got an author visit and 35 free copies of the beautiful book Gloriana Presente by Alyssa Reynsoso-Morris, a story about moving from the Dominican Republic and starting school in a new country! The second grant from DonorsChoose.org funded a butterfly hatching kit and two terrariums to grow succulents and moss and raise snails and ladybugs! Both libraries have pets: African Albino swimming frogs, Betta fish and goldfish. Look for pictures in our next newsletter!
