Welcome to Mr. Makarowitz's
6th Grade Music website!
Hello! My name is Seth Makarowitz. I graduated from SUNY Binghamton with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and LIU Post with NYS certification and a master’s degree in Music Education Birth-12. I plan to expose our students to many different genres of music in addition to introducing them to many different kinds of instruments. The students will learn topics in music theory including note values and placement on the treble and bass clef. They will also learn about rhythm and eventually have the tools to create rhythmic patterns on their own in front of the class!
I really believe that parental involvement is extremely important to be successful in the classroom. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the school year, do not hesitate to contact me.

Grades/Assessment:
Quarterly grades are determined by the following categories:
1) Class Participation (40%) - Students will receive up to 10 points each day on their:
a. ability to be prepared for class with a journal, folder, pen and pencil (2 points)
b. class work completed while in class (2 points)
c. active participation in the classroom discussion (2 points)
d. ability to follow classroom procedures (2 points)
e. homework that is to be prepared and completed in time for class. (2 points)
2) Journal (30%) - Students will often write responses to questions, class work and listening examples inside of their journal. At times, students will have to take photos of their entries and upload them using google classroom.
3) Music Assignments/Projects (30%) - Students will work cooperatively with other students on musical and rhythmic projects throughout the year. They are often long-term and require several classes to complete. There will also be individual components to some projects that will be completed independently during class time. Students will be assessed on the various topics taught throughout the year. There will be at least one announced and one unannounced quiz throughout the quarter.
Resources:
Opus Music Worksheets - This site is a great resource for practicing reading and writing music. Students can test themselves on various units in music theory that we will be covering throughout elementary and middle school.
Powerschool - Parents and students can monitor progress throughout the quarter. Grades will be updated periodically throughout the week.
