The American Library Association (ALA) is one of the oldest and largest professional library associations in the world.

Young Adult Library Services (YALSA) is a branch of the ALA dedicated to serving teens. Their mission statement is:

The Alex Awards are given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18. The winning titles are selected from the previous year's publishing.
