The Mock Newbery Awards are an awesome opportunity to read some excellent books, discuss them with each other, and choose a winner!
Every year librarians and students across the country hold Mock Newbery Awards, and now YOU get to help decide who will win the first Bret Harte Mock Newbery award!
The Bret Harte Mock Newbery Award will be awarded on January 20th, 2020.
On January 20th, the Any Book Book Club (ABBC) will discuss our nominees and vote on our winner.
In order to vote in our Newbery Awards, please read four of the five books on our list.
Each year, the American Library Association (ALA) awards one children’s book the Newbery Medal. The purpose of the Newbery Award is:
To encourage original creative work in the field of books for children.
To emphasize to the public that contributions to the literature for children deserve similar recognition to poetry, plays, or novels.
To give those librarians, who make it their life work to serve children's reading interests, an opportunity to encourage good writing in this field.
Newbery Committee members need to consider the following:
Interpretation of the theme or concept
Presentation of information including accuracy, clarity, and organization
Development of a plot
Delineation of characters
Delineation of a setting
Appropriateness of style.

The Mock Newbery is open to everyone, not just ABBC members. At the end of each month we will vote on the books we want to read next, and the books we read that month. We have grants from the Bret Harte PTSA and ACL, so we are able to buy books that we can keep or choose to donate to the library. If you want to find out more about The Bret Harte Mock Newbery you can go to the Mock Newbery page.
