Treaty of Waitangi

What does the Treaty of Waitangi look like at Otari School?

We are privileged to have many opportunities to increase our Te Reo Maori and Tikanga Maori through having Maori Immersion classes on site.

Children are given frequent opportunities to grow in their knowledge of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga through singing of waiata, regular kapa haka sessions, language learning and cultural experiences.

Supporting the Treaty of Waitangi at home

Parents take trips with their children to cultural sites so that they learn more about Māori culture. For example, Wharewaka, Te Papa and local marae.

Parents talk about Māori culture and seek to learn alongside their child about Tikanga and Te Reo.

Otari School Principle

We honour the Treaty of Waitangi as a symbol of nationhood and partnership, giving all students the opportunity to acquire knowledge of Te Reo Maori and Tikanga Māori. As teachers, we promote whanaungatanga (community), kaitiakitanga (environmental sustainability), and tino rangatiratanga (justice, fairness and partnership).

Montessori Philosophy and Curriculum

As Montessori teachers, we believe that children are enriched through the dual cultures of Aotearoa. Māori are Tangata Whenua and their language and culture are a living part of our society.

MANZ Journey to Excellence Indicators

The Montessori environment is rich with learning opportunities for the young child to explore his/her culture and the world (1.7)
