Guiding Principles

The Otari School Principles, derived from The New Zealand Curriculum (TNZC) and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, are the foundation for decision-making at Otari School.

They guide planning and delivery of the School Curriculum. This website shows how we carry out these principles as a Montessori community.

Ngā Mātāpono Whānui: The Overarching Principles

Central to Te Marautanga o Aotearoa is the Treaty of Waitangi. Arising from the Treaty, the following overarching principles guide our School Curriculum/Marautanga and the teaching and learning in the Māori-medium Strand:

  • The learner is the centre of teaching and learning

  • The learner has a high level of personal awareness

  • The learner achieves their potential

  • School, whānau, community, hapū and iwi work together

  • A healthy environment is a healthy people

~ Based on Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, translation, 2007
