The California State Board of Education has adopted the Common Core State Curriculum, and that is what Oceanside Unified School District uses as a framework for their educational curriculum. An insight for parents/guardians about what their student is learning as they progress throughout the grade levels can be found HERE.
A three minute Youtube video clip explaining the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) can be found HERE.
OUSD now maintains a semester-style grading schedule, meaning there will be only two official Report Cards sent home throughout the school year: in January and June. Informal progress reports will also be provided in October (during parent/teacher conference week) as well as in the spring (March/April).

Students are given numeric grades based on 2nd Grade Academic standards:
3- Meeting Grade Level Expectations for this grading period (the student is at or above grade level)
2- Approaching Grade Level Expectations for this grading period (the student is making progress toward grade level)
1- Below Grade Level Expectations for this grading period (this is an area of concern/the student is not making progress toward grade level)
Benchmark (English/Language Arts - ELA)
iReady Classroom Math (Mathematics)
iReady (ELA & Math Diagnostic testing and weekly minutes)
TWIG Science Program
By the end of 2nd grade students are expected to be reading at an M/N Guided Reading Level (GRL) or higher. This level is based on fluency/expression, story recall, and comprehension questions provided by the district's adopted reading curriculum. Students should enter 2nd grade reading around a J/K level, and with daily phonics practice, nightly reading, and guided reading/strategy groups/one-on-one conferencing, students should grow 4-5 reading levels throughout the school year. Students are taught how to pick "Good Fit" books, that aren't too easy or too hard, in order to promote reading fluency and comprehension with books they are interested in reading. If you have questions throughout the year about your student's reading level, please send me an email and I'll let you know.
Scholastic Books are categorized by Guided Reading Level. If you purchase books, check the GRL to ensure you are buying Good Fit Books for your student! :)

Last school year, we are transitioned to a new math curriculum; OUSD now follows iReady Classroom Mathematics curriculum, which will cover 5 different units throughout the course of our school year. Each unit comes with a consumable student workbook that we will use in class and for homework, along with a digital component that individually scaffolds the content for each student (with examples, demo videos, and reteaching/enrichment activities) that we will use during our math center rotations. This is done through iReady Classroom Math online by accessing the OUSD Portal. Students can log onto this account at home for additional practice, and to show you their scores received on their in-class assignments. However, chapter tests (that count towards the Progress Report grades) will still be done with paper/pencil in order for students to show their work and their thinking, and will be sent home for you to review/keep. If you ever have any questions about these scores please don't hesitate to ask.
In Writing, we will focus on three different writing genres throughout the year (Narrative, Informational, and Opinion). Students will write a prompt at the beginning of each genre so I am able to assess areas of strength/weakness, and make appropriate writing goals for each student throughout the semester and remainder of the year. Then throughout the genre we will practice applying our writing skills to our writing pieces. At the end of the genre, the same rubric will be used to assess areas of growth. At the October conferences this will be explained in more depth where you will see how your student did on the Pre-Narrative Writing Assessment (given at the beginning of the year).
