As sports are the center of many people's world today, having strong sports stories to publish is very important. In the process of writing I have had opportunity to interview both former and current student-athletes. Interviewing these athletes gives you a much deeper understanding of not only the sport you are reporting on but the athlete themselves as well. Thoughout the years, I have learned how to cover sports in all different ways through journalism.
Here I have attached part of my interview with an OHS cheerleader before they attended the state competition in 2024. I got to truly feel the motivation they had everyday for each competition leading up to the national competition.
How have yall have prepared for state this season?
We have definitely had several factors to help us be prepared this season but I think the main one would be consistency. Have a routined practice has allowed us to continually improve and learn from mistakes. I also believe our self-correction assignments have been super beneficial because it allows us to critique ourselves and improve individually, which has gradually improved our routine as a whole.
What has kept the motivated high throughout the season to perform the best possible at state?
I believe most of our motivation this season has come from our coaches. They push us everyday to perform to the best of our ability and remind us that we are capable. Something else that has kept all of us super motivated is the opportunity to attend nationals. The Oxford High School cheer team has not had this opportunity in years and it is very exciting that we get to be a part of it.
Here I have attached part of my interview with an OHS alumna who was an Oxford Chargerette that went on to become an Ole Miss Rebelette and a Tennessee Titans cheerleader. I really got to understand how each team led and taught her things that she will bring with her to future teams.
What was the biggest thing you learned/took away from being an Oxford Chargerette?
The biggest thing was probably the sense of teamwork and comradery that my teammates gave me during all 4 years. I feel like we had a very close knit team and it gave me the ability to know that dance is a team sport. If one messes up you all mess up so I just remember I loved the fact that everyone was so close and we all helped each other. That was something that I brought with me to Rebelettes is you’re there for your teammates if someone is messing up and the coach hasn’t seen it yet go to them and be like hey you’re messing up this before it gets to the coach and helping combat that correction. Or if someone and college is a little bit different than high school but if someone got in trouble or was about to get in trouble outside of Rebelettes then help them before that got to the Coach. Just be a good teammate.
This year we hosted the second annual OHS sports production day. The smiles that the athletes walked in with and their gratitude once receiving the photos was unmatched. No matter age or skill level, all athletes deserve to be recognized and production day was the perfect way to make everyone feel seen. Here I have attached a couple of photos that I took.
Below I have attached some of the sports articles I have written.
I have recently found myself enjoying going to OHS basketball games and getting content. At these games I take photos of the players for newspaper needs. In the photo I have attached to the left, I was getting content to post on the Charger Media Group instagram stories where I give score updates.
In this episode of The Charger Update Kendall Kipping and I interviewed female student-athletes at the annual OHS women in sports breakfast. It was very interesting to see what has the most impact on everyone from their respective sports. You can find these interviews from 1:45-2:41 in the episode.
