Both editing and leadership both serve valuable roles in our staff when it comes to our paper. Our staff takes editing very seriously, making sure that each staff member excels in editing both designs and articles. Leadership is an important factor when it comes to working on a staff, since creating a newspaper is a team effort. Being an underclassman, I can remember having older members take me under their wing and show me all there is to know about newspaper. Thankfully, now that I am that upperclassman, I am able to show our new writers everything they need to know to pass down onto future writers that come through Oxford High School.
This is an example of one of our leadership programs for The Charger. Starting in August, new writers are assigned to an experienced member of the staff. I served as a mentor for this edition, and spent the month showing our new writers what the interviewing, writing, and designing process looks like. We interviewed our school principal as a group, and I was able to show them how to ask detailed questions that lead to detailed answers. I then showed them our step-by-step writing process, and then concluded the month by designing the page. This is one of the many examples of leadership that I was able to partake in with The Charger. Not only did this help develop our new writers, it helped me develop my leadership skills and will be a program that will be passed down for years to come.Â
These are a few examples of pages that have been written and designed by our editors. Every month, we have a group editing day where we dedicate the entire class to reading and checking pages for errors. This method serves to keep even our best writers free from mistakes when submitting our paper to press. We require at least three signatures on each page, making sure that every piece featured in our monthly edition has been checked and edited by more than one staff member. Our group edits are a good way for all of our writers to see their errors on paper and to point out common mistakes to avoid. This sense of teamwork and connection is something I value in our staff, and I believe that it gives us an edge to be the best we can truly be.
