The Netherlands has been known for many years for their progressive infrastructure that allows efficient and safe movement for all modes of transportation. They have specifically implemented bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure to encourage people to opt out of driving and instead walk or bike. In the video, "Cycling in the U.S. from a Dutch Perspective" cycling culture and infrastructure in the United States is described coming from the perspective of someone from the Netherlands. Something that stood out to me immediately when watching the video was how dangerous it was for Americans to cycle with the current infrastructure. The video shows cyclists on various road sections in the U.S. where at one point the narrator describes the movement of cyclists as "trying to outrun traffic." This statement is a testament to how dangerous the conditions are for cyclists in the United States, as well as how there is no separation between the two modes of transportation. The cycle lanes are far too narrow for anyone to feel safe let alone have a pleasant cycling experience. It was interesting to hear the Dutch perspective of this since safety and comfort are some of the top priorities for cycle infrastructure in the Netherlands. Another quote that stood out to me was, "...but there is a lot of cycling here despite the infrastructure, rather than because of it." This was eye opening because in the Netherlands, they have built cycling infrastructure to encourage people to choose cycling as a mode of transportation and in the U.S., some people still choose to cycle even though most of the infrastructure puts them in danger and doesn't necessarily encourage it. An important note is that this video was created over 10 years ago and yet, there has been very little improvement in the United States. I think it would be extremely beneficial for the United States to integrate some of the ideas coming from cycle infrastructure in the Netherlands so that people enjoy cycling and perfer to choose it over other modes of transportation.
