During our walking tour of Den Haag, we came across an unsignalized intersection that is shown in the image to the right. I have never seen an intersection to this magnitude without multiple traffic lights to guide traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians. I didn't know how it could possibly flow without collision. After watching the natural flow of locals here, I was shocked at how seamlessly it worked.
In this intersection, cyclists/ pedestrians get the right of way while cars yield and trams are on a schedule. The idea of cars yielding to cyclists sounds unrealistic from an American perspective; but, the Netherlands has made it the culture for cyclists/ pedestrians to not only have the right of way but to be respected.
This photo shows an unsignalized intersection in Den Haag where all modes of transportation move cohesively. I like this photo because it captures the every day life of people in Den Haag using cycling as a main mode of transportation. Here, the photo captured a woman doing just that with her baby on the front.
