The early elementary years lay the foundation for school and life outcomes, so what can we do to improve early school experiences and set all students up for success? This webinar will feature Dr. Sharon Ritchie, national researcher and principal investigator for the FirstSchool initiative. Ritchie will discuss strategies for:

  • Using classroom observation data to motivate change, guide professional development efforts, and engage in collaborative inquiry to improve teaching practices
  • Creating culturally responsive classrooms in which all students feel like they belong and are competent, valued, and safe

Ritchie will be joined by two elementary school principals, who will discuss how these research-based strategies can work in schools and classrooms.

Webinar: Coaching to Support the Conditions for a Well-Rounded Education

Register today for our upcoming webinar:

“Coaching to Support the Conditions for a Well-Rounded Education”

The practices and learning conditions that support a well-rounded education for all students are key elements of many state plans under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Creating positive school climates and supporting student social and emotional development, however, can seem like a daunting challenge. Principals and teacher leaders play an important role in building educators’ capacity to provide a well-rounded education to all students. They need actionable tools to guide their initiatives.

During this 90-minute webinar, staff from the American Institutes for Research (AIR) will introduce two coaching tools to assist districts and schools in their school climate and social and emotional learning (SEL) implementation efforts. First, participants will be introduced to the Leadership Competency Self-Reflection Tool to understand what effective leaders can do to drive actions that impact SEL and school climate. Second, AIR will present a coaching toolkit for administrators and instructional coaches to support teacher implementation of SEL practices; this toolkit demonstrates how SEL can be integrated seamlessly with academic instruction.

Join AIR for a free webinar on Thursday, April 12th from 3pm to 4:30pm ET to learn more about how to implement our coaching tools in your state, school, or district. Registration is required. Click the link below to register.

Webinar: Building Meaningful and Effective STEM Projects

Tuesday, October 24, 2017 · 09:00:00 PM · Eastern Time (US & Canada)

https://www.bigmarker.com/GlobalMathDept/Building-Meaningful-and-Effective-STEM-Projects

About

Once students step beyond the walls of the school, they rarely tackle challenges with clear labels like "Math" and "Science." Working to craft curriculum that integrates work across multiple disciplines and focuses students on products with visible impact will help prepare them better for the demands of the 21st century workforce, while also pushing them to more robust higher order thinking in discipline-specific academic contexts.

Building such a curriculum can be an overwhelming task, but this webinar will offer you easy inroads and strategies to build projects from the ground up. Learn how to identify collaborators, coordinate schedules, correlate projects with existing standards, and much more! Presented by Zach Strother.

Professional Development for K-8 Mathematics Educators - Views on MKT & Mathematical Modeling

Friday, October 13, 2017 · 01:00 PM · Eastern Time

Professional development for inservice K-8 mathematics teachers is vital to support teachers’ growth in the field. This webinar will focus on two NSF projects — a STEM-C project emphasizing mathematical modeling and an MSP project supporting teachers in advancing their knowledge about the teaching and learning of middle school mathematics. The STEM-C project engaged K-6 teachers in California, Montana and Virginia in one week of professional development (PD) followed by teacher study groups and a culminating conference. In this webinar we will focus on parallels between the affordances of mathematical modeling in three contexts: professional development, teaching and learning of mathematics. The MSP project was led by community college faculty to build partnerships among Arizona schools/districts and the colleges. Teachers were supported in shifting their thinking about mathematics as a set of skills and procedures to thinking about mathematics as a collection of well-connected ideas that anchors their curriculum and instruction. Participants will leave with ideas about how they can positively impact teachers' relationships with mathematics through professional development.

2017 Build Math Minds Virtual Summit • July 31-August 2, 2017 • Online

The Build Math Minds Virtual Summit is an online elementary math conference that you attend in the comfort of your home.

“PD in your PJs!!!”

I’ve attended and presented at conferences across the US & in Canada since 2001. As much as I LOVE going to them, there are challenges to attending them. The cost to attend those conferences isn’t just the registration fee. Most of the cost comes from the travel expenses. Plus, there is the underlying cost of leaving your family and/or your students to go to the conference.

Many of us just can’t do it because of those limitations.

So, I’ve pulled together 27 of my favorite presenters and got them to agree to do a virtual session for all of us.

These presenters are the ones I look for first in the program book at any conference I attend, to ensure I get to their sessions. I can’t wait for you to see their presentations from the comfort of your home or the beach, or while at the park watching on your phone while the kiddos play. I hope you enjoy them!

Note: recording of sessions will be available online until August 7th
