  • NCTM and the Hunt Institute have produced a series of videos to enhance understanding of the mathematics that students need to succeed in college, life, and careers. Beginning in the primary grades, the videos address the importance of developing a solid foundation for algebra, as well as laying the groundwork for calculus and other postsecondary mathematics coursework. The series also covers the Standards for Mathematical Practice elaborated in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and examines why developing conceptual understanding requires a different approach to teaching and learning. Watch all the videos for FREE at nctm.org.

Reports

  • Listening to and Learning from Teachers: A Summary of Focus Groups on the Common Core and Assessments - This report builds on the national teacher survey the Center on Education Policy(CEP) conducted last year. CEP met with small groups of teachers in four states to talk specifically about the Common Core and new assessments. The discussions were frank and overwhelmingly positive, with teachers eager to strengthen and improve their instruction and to contribute to fine tuning the new assessments. The report shares their feedback and views and offers policy recommendations for state and local leaders.
  • What happens when teachers collaborate across state lines to design and teach the same high-quality units? That’s the focus of the three-year Common Assignment Study, which involved teachers in Colorado and Kentucky. Their experiences—and the units they designed—are informative for others across the country who want to improve teaching and learning.
  • Remodeling for Digital Curriculum - Leaders are questioning the status quo and developing effective paths to transform. Successful patterns and programs are emerging. The Learning Counsel has talked to hundreds of leaders and looked at exceptional districts and schools to see what they are doing differently.
  • Ten Questions for Mathematics Teachers… and How PISA Can Help Answer Them - This report delves into topics such as, “How much should I encourage my students to be responsible for their own learning in mathematics?” or “As a mathematics teacher, how important is the relationship I have with my students?”. It gives teachers timely and relevant data and analyses that can help them reflect on their teaching strategies and how students learn.
